Did you know that Monkey Junction was once one of the Port City’s most unusual tourist attractions? The name of the crossroads that is situated along the county’s narrow southern peninsula sandwiched between the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway, has always been an attention-getter. Interestingly enough, that was the idea in the first place! In the 1950s when Wilmington was a sleepy little coastal town, a gas station owner advertised that his establishment was the only place to see a real, live monkey on the way to Carolina Beach. The ploy worked and made the “junction” of what is now College Road and Carolina Beach Road, quite famous.
Today the monkeys are long gone, but the area is a hub of activity and a choice destination for house hunters. There are many new neighborhoods to choose from along with big box retailers, banks, medical facilities, outstanding restaurants, noteworthy schools and a public library branch. Property choices cover the full spectrum, from starter homes and condos to golf communities and waterfront properties. There are even a few luxury standouts that boast their own private islands! In addition to convenience and a great supply of goods and services, residents are also enticed by the fact that Carolina Beach is just a quick drive, boat ride or paddle away! In the span of less than twenty minutes, one can cross the Snow’s Cut Bridge and head to the beautiful beaches of Pleasure Island, Ft. Fisher and the N.C. Aquarium. Thanks to the direct route via Carolina Beach Road, historic downtown Wilmington is also minutes away!
